Why Eric Cantor’s shocking loss likely kills immigration reform

The No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House is a goner.

And amid the ashes of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s shocking defeat Tuesday night, comprehensive immigration reform smolders.

This is not to say that immigration reform would have passed if the Virginia Republican had not been the first House majority leader to lose since 1899. Immigration reform was already endangered.

But Cantor’s defeat to tea partier David Brat was so intertwined with immigration — “amnesty” and “illegal aliens” — that the few fence-sitters in the GOP-led House are going to flock back to the politically right side of the divide.

California court strikes down teacher tenure rules in major ruling (+video)

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge struck down five key California rules affecting the hiring and firing of teachers Tuesday, agreeing with plaintiffs that they made it too difficult to remove ineffective teachers from public school classrooms and that children’s education suffered as a result.

If upheld, legal and education analysts say, the decision will reverberate throughout the nation’s education establishment.

Nevada GOP Assembly Leader Pat Hickey Wins Primary

Nevada Assemblyman Pat Hickey has turned back a party challenge from the conservative right in the Republican primary.
The Reno lawmaker seeking a third consecutive term was challenged by Rick Fineberg, a retired lawyer who described himself as a constitutional conservative.
Hickey, a painting contractor by trade, also served one term in the Assembly in 1997.
He was targeted by conservative members of his party in part over a school maintenance tax bill that was shuttled by state lawmakers to the Washoe County School Board for enactment.

Some conservatives called the move an unconstitutional ploy to circumvent a state law requiring a two-thirds majority to pass tax increases. It eventually died at the county level.
Hickey will face nonpartisan candidate Niklas Putnam in the District 25 general election in November. (AP)

Fox News pushes conservatives further to the right by distorting their perceptions

Now here’s a completely unsurprising thing – watching Fox News tends to harden the conservative views of the people who watch it.

Although we probably didn’t need research to tell us that, it does underline the way in which media output reinforces its consumers’ political and social outlook.

The reciprocal relationship between viewer and TV channel is identified in a survey called “What Americans want from immigration reform in 2014,” which was carried out by the Brookings Institute, see here, and the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), see here.
