Operation Free's "Veterans for American Power" bus tour to arrive in Reno
Veterans call on Congress to address national security threats from climate change, dependence on fossil fuels
Veteran members of Operation Free will be stopping in Reno this Tuesday on a 21-state tour to talk to citizens and local community leaders about national security concerns that would come from unchecked climate change. A week after the Pentagon has named climate change as a key national security risk.
Operation Free (www.operationfree.net) is a coalition of veterans and national security groups working together to raise public awareness about national security threats posed by climate change and U.S. reliance on fossil fuels and foreign oil.  Its goal is to support climate and energy policies that cut carbon pollution and develop clean energy incentives.
The Bus stops in Reno, this Tuesday, February 9 at Noon.   The tour stop is West Street Plaza at First and West Streets in downtown Reno.
In the words of Operation Free, “The US spends $1 billion a day buying crude oil from other countries which puts money into the hands of those that don’t support us and increases the dangers to our troops.”  In a world faced with the unfortunate reality of spontaneous terrorist threats, Operation Free calls attention to the way in which energy independence makes our world more stable and less dangerous.   According to the CIA, climate change is a “threat multiplier” that makes pre-existing security challenges worse.
Operation Free is using a biodiesel-capable bus and has purchased carbon offsets to make sure its tour is carbon neutral. For more information about the tour, visit the Operation Free Veterans for American Power Bus Tour website (www.operationfree.net/on-the-bus/).
